Choosing Inline Spinner Colours

Fishing in Clear Water

Fishing in clear water or during a sunny day means that the fish have high visibility. Under these conditions, it is important to use natural, light coloured lures that will not spook the fish. Some light, natural colours include: grey, white, oil, green, or anything that matches natural forage colours, including black.

Fishing in Dark Water:

Fishing in dirty water or during a cloudy day means that the fish have low visibility. Under these conditions, it is important to use bright or black lures that will help attract their attention. Some bright lure colours include: chartreuse, bright red, pink, purple etc. Using a lure that has significant vibration also increases the chance of attracting a fish.

Gold vs Silver Blades

Gold and silver are a great starting place for selecting the most effective blade colours, as they work under almost all conditions. In clear water or during sunny days, it is recommended to use a silver blade. And alternatively it is recommended to use a gold blade when fishing in dirty water or during cloudy days.

Colours and Water Depth

The depth of the water directly affects which colours can be visible. The chart below outlines which colours are visible at certain depths:

Spinner Pro Tip

Unless a downrigger is being used to place the spinner at a low depth, most spinners are retrieved above 20m (approx. 30ft). This means that all spinners colours will likely be visible when casting from a boat or shoreline.
